'QBE strikes again with their kindness and dedication to giving back… I’m thrilled to share that our QBE Foundation recently provided me and my colleagues with £50 credit in the global QGiving portal, allowing us to donate to charities of OUR choice… Personally, I was able to contribute to a charity back home that directly impacts members of my family'

About QBE Insurance

QBE Insurance is a global insurer operating in 27 countries, committed to enabling a more resilient future through its innovative and impactful workplace giving initiatives.

The Challenge

QBE Insurance faced a fragmented and inconsistent workplace giving experience across its global divisions in 27 countries. Different regions had their own approaches, creating barriers for employees who wanted to participate in charitable activities. Some regions even lacked access to workplace giving altogether, and employees had limited options for selecting charities to support or volunteer with. This disjointed system hindered employee engagement and limited the overall impact of QBE’s philanthropic efforts.

The challenge was to create a globally consistent experience that was accessible to all employees, while balancing various tax jurisdictions, privacy laws, and country-specific regulations.

The Solution

To address these challenges, QBE launched the QGiving platform through the QBE Foundation. The QGiving platform, by Benevity Spark, was chosen for its ability to handle various tax jurisdictions, privacy laws, and country-specific regulations, ensuring a seamless experience for all employees.

The QGiving platform empowered employees to support causes they cared about through personal donations, fundraising, payroll giving, volunteering, 'seeding', rewards and gamification. Matching is also available on eligible causes and campaigns. This holistic approach not only enhanced employee satisfaction but also fostered a stronger sense of community and purpose within the organisation.

Communications such as regular updates with promotional material, senior leadership announcements, intranet articles and sharing of impact stories have been effective. Engagement initiatives have also played a significant role the success of this program, with creative ideas such as a program naming competition, 'Sustainability Trivia', and Sustainability Idea Competition where winners receive gifts to donate.

The Results

The implementation of QGiving has been a resounding success, significantly boosting employee engagement and community impact. Metrics highlight this achievement: QBE employees collectively volunteered 9,700 hours, donated US$540,000, and benefitted from US$788,000 in matched donations from the QBE Foundation. The total participation rate reached an impressive 24.6%. In addition, the QBE AcceliCITY program exemplifies the broader impact of these initiatives.

The top 3 factors for success were identified by QBE as:

  • Special campaigns with double matching and seeding. These campaigns were catalysers for fundraising, employees loved being able to see their efforts multiply
  • Employee choice for donations has raised the number of charities supported from 711 in 2022, to over 2,250 in 2023
  • Volunteer rewards enabled employees to contribute their time when they couldn't financially support a cause. 64% of rewards for volunteering were distributed which equaled US$97K.

Overall, the QGiving platform has transformed QBE’s workplace giving program, making it a best practice model in Australia and beyond. By creating a more inclusive and efficient process, QBE has successfully fostered a culture of kindness and giving, benefiting both the organisation and the wider community.
