About Intrepid Travel
Intrepid Travel is a global adventure travel company specialising in small group tours with local leaders, focusing on authentic, responsible experiences in over 100 countries since 1989, known for connecting travelers with local cultures, supporting communities via The Intrepid Foundation, and holding B Corp certification for ethical business practices.Strategic Grantmaking with Shared Value
In 2023, Intrepid Travel launched its Impact Grant Program to complement the untied funding already provided through The Intrepid Foundation. Designed exclusively for the company’s long-term charity partners, the program supports innovative projects that would not otherwise be possible. Grants of up to AUD 50,000 are awarded annually, with funding decisions guided by four objectives: impact, gender inclusion, climate action, and staff engagement. By aligning funding criteria with both community needs and Intrepid’s corporate values, the program creates shared value—delivering tangible benefits for local communities while strengthening the company’s reputation as a purpose-led business.
Employee Involvement Across the Journey
Employee engagement is at the heart of the program. Each charity partner is matched with an Intrepid staff member who acts as a relationship manager, offering guidance during the application process and ensuring transparent communication. Staff also join grant assessment panels, prepare pitch videos for finalists, and participate in voting to select final grantees.
In 2024, the program saw 40 employees apply for the assessment panel, with eight selected to help shortlist projects. Later, 792 employees (21% of staff globally) voted on finalists, representing a 27% increase in participation from the previous year. This structured involvement ensures staff not only understand the program but also feel ownership of its outcomes.
Community Impact and Early Outcomes
The program’s second grant round cycle distributed AUD 266,000 across eight projects. Already, several initiatives have demonstrated impressive results. In Kenya, the Patinaai Osim Maasai Women’s Hub empowered more than 20 women through skills training and sustainable income opportunities while incorporating climate resilience education. In Cambodia, solar panels installed by the Cambodia Rural Students Trust improved campus sustainability, benefiting more than 100 students daily. Meanwhile, Morocco’s Amal Association advanced culinary training for underserved women, combining practical skills with holistic support to enhance long-term employability.
Continuous Improvement and Future Vision
The 2025 cycle has built on these successes with refinements to the application process, clearer guidance for partners, and expanded engagement opportunities. For the first time, customer voting and collaboration with a corporate partner will further amplify reach and impact. These improvements reflect Intrepid’s commitment to trust-based philanthropy, equity, and continuous learning.
Conclusion
Intrepid Travel’s Impact Grant Program demonstrates how a corporate grants program can be both strategic and human-centered. By engaging employees at every stage and prioritizing projects with deep social and environmental value, the program has fostered stronger communities, built internal capability, and reinforced Intrepid’s role as a leader in purpose-driven business.
